Whatever Happened ?
« on: January 25, 2021, 07:04:50 PM »
Having nothing else to do these days but watch wall to wall football three things get me about this simple game

a) What happened to the yellow card for diving ?  I haven't seen one in all the games watched - but have seen plenty
of dives and feigned injury.

b) What happened to the once simple Off-Side rule that we all (players/spectators) could understand ?  We now have
a rule where Assistant Refs wait until a move is finished (at their discretion) before a flag is raised. What?  Bonkers.

c) And less said about pulling/tugging in the 6 yard area at corners/free kicks. Have yet to see a penalty given.  So
a free kick is awarded for this outside the penalty area but not inside. Bonkers.

Thats it. Off to watch another match.

All good points.  A couple to add :

What happened to retreating 10 yards when a free kick is awarded ?  These days the defending team often stand a play right in front of the ball to prevent the kick being taken quickly, to allow their team to prepare themselves and thus negate the advantage the free kick was supposed to the give to compensate for the foul ?
Or wasn't it ever the rule ?

Why do refs allow teams to get away with picking the ball up and running back to defend when a free kick or throw in is given against them, thus preventing quick free kicks ?
Yet they sometimes, quite rightly,  book players for kicking the ball away when free kicks are awarded.

Why do teams have to wait for defending teams to form a wall, line up the 'keeper etc when freekicks are given within 25/30 yards ?  It wastes so much time and reduces the advantage of the free kick.
The free kicks are meant to penalise the team which commits the fouls.
