Title: Ex-Ducks
Post by: Luke on February 21, 2019, 11:27:12 AM
From casting my eye around the leagues this week, I see Chid Onokwai has joined Hayes & Yeading United. He is 4th in the this season's Bostik League South Central goalscorers with 17 goals for Marlow and FC Romania.

Elsewhere Lewis Putman - having failed to really settle anywhere since Slough Town - is back scoring goals for Oxhey Jets. Always thought it was only a matter of time before he returned there.

If only we needed a striker, eh?

When he signed for Wendy i was racking my brains to wonder why i knew the name, so thanks for solving the mystery Jamie!

Paul Bastock is now assistant manager at Kings lYnn Town and recently turned out for them at the ripe old age of 48

Doesnt seem possible that Dominic Iorfa was 20 years ago, back in the season with Ugly Bob.

His wiki page shows quite a few moves back in that year, not sure how accurate it is of course, but Gravesend managed 6 games out of him. He only seemed to manage a couple of games at the several other clubs he was at. Although I suspect he was serving a suspension here and there with his potty mouth  :D

The page also says this:

"He enjoyed a successful spell in the Irish Premier League with Waterford United and was adored by the fans, despite missing a penalty on his debut. To this day, his yellow Puma boots are still worn by the clubs kitman who received the boots off Iorfa shortly before he left the club."

Adcock and Casey must have improved.

Another 2 in the 'much better everywhere else' category. Both were pretty much ever present for Potters Bar and Casey had a good scoring record there, as he does so far at Chesham I think.

OK this isn't an ex duck but it's interesting watching Portsmouth v Sunderland and seeing Ollie Hawkins up front for Pompey.  I've been reading the match reports from the 4 games he played against us.  His first was for Hillingdon Borough (came on as a HT sub, marked by Fritzy!) in front of 58 people, a bit different from the 20k he's in front of tonight!

Recent loan 'stars' Benji Aghadiuno and Dejon Noel-Williams were both released at the end of the season, from Barnet and Oxford United respectively.

The latter signed for Wealdstone where he was one of new manager Dean Brennan's first signings. He'll link up with another ex-Duck Stuart Maynard who follows Brennan everywhere he goes is assistant manager.

Brennan and Maynard should never have let themselves get tempted by the £££ of Billericay. They should do ok at Wealdstone, a far more sensibly run club.

Yes, Alex came on in Winslow's FA cup game the other weekend and Vinny played against us in the pre-season friendly at MK Robins.

I see Tre scored for Bedford on Saturday. Bedford tweeted a picture of him celebrating with a caption along the lines of 'this is how much scoring your first goal for Bedford means'. I felt like replying 'yes until someone offers £10 a game more' but thought better of it!

Former Ducks 'cult hero' Mark Jones (brother of Daniel) lost his job as Oxford City manager last week, despite once again leading them to the FA Cup 1st Round.

Seemed a bit of a strange decision considering he's done a good job of keeping them in the Conference South every season and taken them on some great runs in the FA Cup.

Looking from the outside (I don't know the ins and outs of it), looks like he might have been stabbed in the back by Director of Football Justin Merritt (definitely NOT an Aylesbury cult hero, apparently) who has replaced him as manager...

One for the longer-standing supporter, Mark Ducket has just been appointed as Bedford Town's new manager

He was a left back on loan to us from Stevenage Borough back in 2000/01, pretty good I seem to remember.

Had been in charge of Eynesbury Rovers, who threw away a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3 in the Vase to Leighton Town on Saturday in a game marred by crowd trouble caused in large (reportedly) by the travelling Town yoof.

Last night I went to see Chalfont St. Peter for whom (as previously reported) Sydney Ibie is leading the line. He scored a penalty for Saints last night but they were pretty poor in a 2-1 defeat at Bedfont Sports. Having said that, we don't usually see much of players once they leave on dual reg deals, can be difficult recalling them.

I watched Berko beat Bedford 1-0 this evening, with Kinnane and Frederick quite prominent for the home side.  Testament to Jordan that he didn't look out of place in the middle of the Berko midfield.  Hard fought match, Bedford didn't do enough to force a goal against a makeshift Berko team (5 out injured), who scored rather against the run of play, with the usual bitching & moaning from the away bench as the game progressed.  It was quite amusing as a neutral listening to the reaction of the Bedford fans who seemed to think they only had to turn up to win the game! ;D

In other news, Ty scored twice in Rushden's win against Lowestoft this evening.

What's everyone's view on Risborough? Are they a money team or have they got the right combination of experience, youth etc? Thought I'd ask as they're likely opponents next season the way things are going for them.

Looking at their team sheet there's one or two players that it could be argued would command reasonable money but there's also a few decent local players and players who've been with the club since they were kids. Seen a few people on social media say it's all down to the playing budget but I'm not so sure.

Lee is there ground graded? I would be very surprised.

Got to be borderline. Not much room to expand down there without impinging on the cricket and tennis clubs. Do clubs still have a year post promotion to sort their ground out?

Seems a strange one given their strength of forward options, but good luck to him.

In other news Moses Emmanuel joined Colney Heath and played for them on Saturday, to become one of our shortest-lived ever signings after 1 substitute appearance and joins the elite list of modern Ducks I never saw play for us  ;D

Not ex Duck related but Berko signing Hendon’s top scorer is the type of signing the play off teams should be making not a bench warmer from a team lower down the division.

Nope seems not. That's 4 games now as an unused substitute; waste of talent that  :'(

Banbury have a strong squad and I'm sure he never expected to walk in and be first choice straight away, but how long does he give it without even getting on the pitch?!

Title: Re: Ex-Ducks
Post by: Ian on March 20, 2022, 09:52:29 AM
I'm as frustrated for us as I am for Max.  It's fine to come in a poach a good player from a level below if you expect him to improve your team or at least your squad.  But, not to give him the chance to show his worth on the pitch denies him his chance and takes him away from a team that he was a key component of.

At least with Ty and Jamie, we saw them go on to make an impact at the next level, Max has not had that opportunity.  With the club almost certain to get promoted, you have to wonder what opportunities Max will get at Banbury in Conference level football.  It's all well and good moving on for a bigger pay packet, but I am sure Max would rather be playing football, whatever financial rewards are available.

It was only 2 subs from necessity - Ben would happily have filled the bench if he could have.

I'd be interested to know which players you feel aren't good enough, considering the bulk of the squad are still players who have served us well in previous seasons.

I think we all know that squads evolve; I have no doubt that, within his budget, Ben will be looking to make that happen.  Just remember, we have been punching above our weight for a long while now, given the sustainable budget we give the manager; that isn't likely to change much next season I'm afraid.  What I do know is I trust Ben to gather a competitive squad.

Maybe.  Who knows what plans they have for him.  Maybe they signed him and he isn't quite the finished article or not impressing enough in training.

If they have 'signed him for the future' I would have liked to see him stay with is on loan for the remainder of this season.  I am sure he is frustrated getting no time on the pitch.

BTW, he did get 20 minutes today.

Does Steve Bateman stepping down at Dynamos suggest they may not be the contenders the rumour mill was hinting they would be? Credit to them if they are choosing to live within their means instead.

I think Stotfold may be dark horses at Step 5 next season. Nice new ground which will help attract players, momentum from last season's success and a well connected manager hint that they may do well (not that I'm a Step 5 expert it has to be said).
